The grapevine is one of the oldest plants in the world but today we’re going to talk about making it a new addition to your garden. Gail from ISU is with me and Gail, how do we create our own little vineyard? One of the first things to create a successful vineyard is to select the best site and that would include welldrained soils, perfect sun light aspect and then also the aspect of where we’re avoiding herbicide drift injury because these can in fact harm grapevines. Now how do we get the grapevines? The grapevines can be purchased from a local nursery or through mail order and what a home gardener would receive is a dormant rooted grapevine and these would be set in the soil at the same level that they were in the nursery.

After they’re planted into the soil the next thing that would be done would be they would be pruned back to 23 of the strongest buds and these will develop into strong shoots for the developing grapevine. Now how long does it take to create the grapes? The grapes will be formed with the partial crop in the third year and certainly we would expect a full crop in the fourth year. These are very long lived and we would expect at least 25 years of production. That’s great! Now what kinds of grapes do well in our zones? The American types are especially hearty and they grow quite well. For example, in the blue cultivars, two that a very popular and successful are Fredonia.
