Serving Growing Ohios Grape and Wine Industry
Last January, January 6ththe official day of the polar vortex we experienced really damaging temperatures.Anywhere from around twenty below zero to about sixteen below zerowhere it killed the fruiting buds and it killed actual grape vines. And we've never experienced any damage like this before. And we've never we really didn't know the extentof the damage on the vines until April May in that time frame when we didn't see anybuds developing and even some of thetrunks cracked.
But the impact of that was dramaticwe have no crop at all in our vinifera and we grow varieties like Chardonnay, PinotNoir, Cabernet Franc, Rieslingand without any grapes, we were forced to buya lot of grapes. But it's had a huge impactas far as the grape production not to mention the actual wine losswhich is two or three years spanning. Because in some of the vineyardsthat will have to be replaced from the ground up
with new vines we will not get the first crop is three to four years out.So the impact is just dramatic and millions and millions of dollars.Actually in the viticulture program at Ohio Stateone of our focus of the research is cold hardiness of grapes. So really that's one of my expertise in this fieldof learning more about how grapes cope with freezing with cold in general. After this cold event our growers really needed a lot of help in terms of how to not onlyassess
the damage but also how to deal with the vinesthat are damaged. And we conducted a lot of workshops just toshow them how to prune the vines. Our relationship with Ohio State goes wayback in the 1980'sWe've had a long standing relationship with ongoing research in the wineryand in the vineyards. Currently with Imed Damiour research stems lately from the cold winter vortexwhere we've had a lot of the vines killed and damagedfrom the minus twenty degree temperatures.
Current research is kind of involved tothe extent of the damage to determine the actual damage andto have pruning studies done to see what was the best way to prunethese injured vines. We have not had temperatures that coldsince 1994 here and myself and a lot of the grape growershave not experienced this cold damage. So we need research to help uskind of figure out what's the next step and see what our future is in these vineyards.

So, I've already gone ahead and, and animatedthis and I want to show you how it works and then I'll show you how I built it. So we'vegot the square and the circle. Back on frame one, they start out in these positions andthey travel to these positions. So basically they just crisscross each other. OK. Let's,let me show you how I did that. I'm going to undo my past work and show you. OK. So,Mr. Square over here, remember this is kind of like a stage. This is your canvas or yourstage, and these are your actors. So, actor Square is on the stage at frame one, but frametwo he's off. So we need, we need to put him in. So what we do is we create a frame byhitting F5 at frame ten. So now, remember
this is frames over time. So at frame twoCircle guy is not on the stage anymore. But Square guy is because we've just added thatframe at frame ten. So he stays there throughout. So we want Circle guy to be there at ten.So we go to frame ten and click F5 and now they're both there for the entire durationof the first ten frames, when they disappeared. So, on ten, frame ten though we want themto do something else. Key framing is about saying OK on frame one do this, on frame tendo this and then the computer just interpolates this, the hard stuff in between. So on frameten, what I want you to do is hit F6, which creates a key frame for both of these. Andthen you can move your characters into their
new positions and then they go from frameone in these positions to frame ten in these positions. The problem is the computer's notinterpolating between them. What we want to see is the movement, not just the stuttery, jump from one place to another. So what you do is you left click on your mouse and godown to create motion tween. Do that for both Circle and Square and then you've createdthe motion in between.

Okay, so, so farlet's move this controllerout of the wayso far I've shown you motion tween, but I haven't shown you shape tween, and there's a difference. And tween, just for your vernacular, is the shortcut for quot;inbetweenquot;, so a key frame here and a key frame here, to tween it between the two is whatthe computer does. So let's create a new layer. And I actually need to label this quot;Circle2quot;. So let's create this new layer, and let's create a square. Hold down the Shift key,and create a square, and I want to fill that with yellow. Group it, Apple G, or Ctrl G. Actually, youknow what, undo that. Okay now, over the course
of this timeline, I want this square to changeinto a diamond. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to the end frame here, I'm goingto move this, and I'm going to hit F6 to create newwhat happened there was that my entiretimeline was selected. I only want this one frame to be selected. So hit F6 and then whatI can do is I can adjust the shape into a diamondkind of rough diamond but will haveto do. And then, as you can see, nothing is happening until the very end where it snapsinto a diamond. Well that's because I've got to turn tweening on. Remember, hold down yourright mouse key and instead of creating a motion tween, we create what's called a shapetween. Okay, so, a motion tween is just when
something does not change shape but it moves. While a shape tween will change the shape. See thaté Now we're going across the timelineand it's changing from a square into a diamond. And in fact if we select this and move it here. Now if we use our controller, wecan see what's going on. See how it moved and changed shape at the same timeé And thatis a shape tween.
